Post traumatic growth

 

     Sixteen-year-old Jaydin Goldenstein's mother died April 27th, while he was at her bedside. The very next day he was scheduled to play baseball for his high school team in Holyoke, Colorado. It would be a double-header, and he decided to play.

    The coach almost overruled him, worried about his emotional state, but Jaydin wanted to play.

     In the first game he pitched a no-hitter. In the second game he hit four home runs.

      When I read this story it called to mind the work Dr. Martin Seligman is doing with soldiers coming home from the war. He is helping them access a very real phenomenon he calls "post traumatic growth." A response to stress that is powerful and positive.

     General David Petraeus was so impressed with Seligman's work that he said, "That is a big idea, Dr. Seligman... producing more post-traumatic growth rather than just focusing on post-traumatic stress disorder, and approaching training through our soldiers' strengths rather than drilling their weaknesses out of them."

    Dr. Seligman is best known for his book and work called Learned Optimism. His new book Flourish is even more exciting than that one, in my opinion, because he's now had years to apply his findings and expand his influence.

     "If all a soldier knows about is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and not about resilience and growth, it creates a self-fulfilling downward spiral," says Seligman.

      There is a mind shift that happens when you move from stress and pain into resilience and growth. It's a completely different response. Seligman's research shows that resilience and growth are more likely to be your response to trauma, but we just never hear about it. All we hear about is the disorder and the pain. Tragedy sells, and it gets more attention than strength and courage so it forms the false perception that depression and collapse are "normal." Once it's seen as normal it's hard not to just go there. Into the downward spiral. It's all the rage.

Time to leave your cocoon

     My friend James Price is pictured up above and, yes, that's a real butterfly, a huge butterfly that flew into a small village camp in the Gulf of Thailand that James was staying in.

     James loves traveling the world even though he is a master coach whose clients miss him when he leaves the country.      My motive in writing my first mystery (The Woman Who Attracted Money) was to introduce people to coaching. In the book, life coach Robert Chance has some coaching sessions with Madison Kerr. The reader gets to see how a coach thinks and works, and how a client's world opens like a butterfly.

     The biggest intellectual breakthrough in the life of the great poet William Butler Yeats came when he realized that happiness and growth were the same thing. "Happiness is neither this nor that," he said. "Happiness is growth. We are happy when we are growing."  You can notice this for yourself: You are happy when you are growing, are you not?  And no growth you've ever made has ever been effortless.

     Watch the nature film of a butterfly struggling to push through the cocoon. You will see effort. You will be moved by the effort. You will see the animating force within a living being. It's the force of a powerful reinvention. Watch the movie Rocky. You will see the hidden connection between effort and joy. Pay attention to your reactions to certain scenes in movies. Pay attention to your goose bumps and your tears. They come in response to courage and effort. They don't come in response to a scene in which someone is being comfortable. Pay attention to why you are choked up. It is your potential self trying to tell you something. It's the butterfly in your own cocoon. It wants out.

     Even a subtle (mind)SHIFT in our thinking

     "In 1960, Edward Lorenz, a research meteorologist at MIT, created an incredibly accurate computer program designed to model the weather. Then, one day, Lorenz took a short-cut, rounding off a decimal point. But this tiny change made a huge difference. The popular notion was that if you barely change a cause, you'll barely alter the outcome. In fact, Lorenz saw that a tiny change could drastically affect the weather. The name for this phenomenon is called "the butterfly effect", that is, tiny changes brought about by a butterfly moving its wings in San Francisco can transform the weather in Shanghai.  Even a subtle change in our thinking can have a butterfly effect on our lives. Lift your thinking just a little higher, and the outcome will be greater beyond your power to predict."

     You can create a new self by learning the beliefs you want to live by-one thought at a time. Learn these thoughts as you would the lyrics for a song you had to perform on stage. A friend of mine used to learn his parts in musicals by placing index cards with song lyrics all over his office, home and bathroom mirror. He sometimes had them on the dashboard of his car. Why? He was making a conscious visual effort to reach the backside of his own mind.

       The trick is to keep your motivation going. To deliberately feed your spirit with the optimistic ideas you want to live by. Any time a thought or sentence or paragraph inspires you or opens up your thinking, you need to capture it, like a butterfly in a net, and later release it into your own field of consciousness.
