What is passion anyway?

  This baby boy Kaleo Litvin has already developed a passion for reading great books.

     When the education system grows weak, we compensate with self-reliance. We teach ourselves.

      Somebody asked me the other day what my passion was. All I could think of was Kathy, but I'm sure that was not what they meant.  

      What is your passion? What is mine?
     
      My passion is to do exactly what I'm doing this second as I am writing these words to you. To communicate with another human being and make a difference if I can. My intention is to be a non-authoritarian voice for personal growth. Not a teacher but a student momentarily in front of a class.
  
      Almost all psychology and self-help books are written by doctors, athletes and super achievers... doctors of psychology, doctors of spirituality, doctors of medicine and doctors of superior authority and wisdom. I am only an authority on my own life. 

     I am just an average person writing to other average people like you. I am a doctor of nothing. My intention is to talk to people as if I were their friend, not some hyped-up, sprocketing, adrenaline-addict sliding across the stage in a mortician's suit screaming like a secular evangelist about dreams and wishes and goals and passion and desperate hopes. All hopes are desperate. Let's live in the now. It's time to live, for all of us....right now.

Trench Town
Kingston, Jamaica

  Okay I'm not really in Trench Town. Not even in Jamaica. Just at my friend Carla' house playing guitars and piano and tonight was Bob Marley night featuring No Woman No Cry which had us all singing about
the poverty-ridden shanty town that was the cradle of reggae, ska and rocksteady music.

     I knew the Joan Baez version best of No Woman No Cry. So this is my way of saying how wonderfully music can waft us to faraway places with strange sounding names.

  Cue up the theme from My Three Sons:

     Kathy and I recently stayed at the Beverly Garland Holiday Inn in Los Angeles and it was quite charming. Walking distance from Universal Studios. We walked there, but oh my it was high up on a hill! What a walk!

     Beverly Garland was an actress who later owned this hotel. Pictures of her all over, and a nice bio/documentary movie running on a continuous loop in the hotel room. Oh, come on, you've heard of her. She starred in Swamp Women, It Conquered the World and The Alligator People just to name three. Also a ton of TV including My Three Sons.

I love that, 'I'm just a student temporarily in front of the class' That really resonates with me and how I want to be. Also liked the 'doctor of nothing', especially in a field where it was fashionable to have 'dubious' phd's for a while.

Is the new book available? I couldn't see it on the website or amazon.

The single thing I like best about Steve Chandler's books -- and I've read most of them -- is the straight-forward, "I'm not Superman" tone. I think my single favorite passage, from '10 Commitments To Your Success', is when Chandler urges readers to 'have an average day.' The toxic nature of trying to be extraordinary and amazing was a revelation to me. Now I let life come to me. I do my best. I show up. Steve is that wise friend across the table, just sharing what works.
